Hex Nut
Hex nuts are internally threaded fasteners with a six sided exterior shape designed to be tightened with a wrench or socket. They are commonly used with bolts, studs, and machine screws to clamp parts together. Hex nuts are made in many sizes and thread types, including inch and metric, and they are available in different strength grades and materials to match the fastener and the demands of the application.
Selecting a hex nut involves matching the correct thread size and pitch to the bolt, choosing a compatible strength grade, and considering the environment. A higher strength bolt should be paired with a nut that can handle the same clamp load without stripping, and corrosion resistant materials or coatings may be needed for outdoor or wet conditions. In applications with vibration, a standard hex nut may be used with a locking method such as a lock washer, threadlocker, or a prevailing torque style nut depending on the joint requirements.
